About Our Beers

Wells & Young’s is one of the leading independent regional brewers in Britain. All of our beers are brewed on the banks of the River Great Ouse in the county town of Bedford.

Wells and Young’s joined forces in 2006 bringing together two great names in British family brewing and over 300 years of expertise. The Wells Family still run the brewery, as they have done since 1875.

All of our beers are made with natural mineral water extracted from the brewery’s own well

Bedford is a lively cosmopolitan town located in quiet unspoilt countryside. Brewing in the town of Bedford can be traced back to the 1700’s. With Bedford’s rich history and heritage a programme of festivals and events, such as the Bedford River Festival, the International Kite Festival and the Victorian Christmas Fair are held annually.

What makes the product special?

Wells & Young’s are “the speciality beers specialist”. We are in a unique position of having modern brewing and packaging facilities combined with brewing heritage and stringent ingredients policies. This guarantees quality, consistency and choice for the increasingly discerning .

All Wells & Young’s ales are brewed under the watchful eye of our Head Brewer Jim Robertson (who is Bedford born & bred) to ensure quality and expertise through and through.

Ingredients produced locally

Four simple ingredients make our beer great; hops, yeast, malt barley and natural mineral water. Only natural ingredients are used and nothing artificial is added.

The finest English hops give Wells & Young’s ales their distinct flavour. Different varieties of hops are used to deliver different profiles.

Much of the subtle differences in the flavours of beers come from the yeast strain used. Our brewers fiercely guard their yeast strains like secret recipes, so no one else can know what gives each brand its unique characteristics.

The British climate is particularly favourable for growing superior quality malting barley. There are many different types of malt depending on the flavour profile required. Many Wells & Young’s ales use the highly acclaimed Maris Otter malt – considered to be the ‘ultimate’ malt.
Wells & Young’s has its own accredited well to supply natural mineral water for each brew. The water is limestone filtered which provides it with a balance of minerals that make it almost perfect for brewing. The water is pure and constant, so it doesn’t need chemical treatment, unlike water used by other breweries

Waste product from the brewing process goes to local farms for use as animal feed.
