If you tune into Lark Rise to Candleford on a Sunday evening you’ll be familiar with the bygone day sight of a High St boasting a butcher, a milliner, dressmaker, fruiterer, fishmonger, hardware store and so on.
Roots Food Markets were devised to try and rekindle a little of the lost magic of food shopping, by trying to put some theatre and experience back into the, too often, mundane task of shopping. And whilst we’re hanging on to our rustic charm, we’re spoiling you by going cyber!

And we’ve given birth to a team out of the same mould too – smart, smiley and knowledgeable – and we’ll carry your bags for you!

Roots is neither vying to be labelled a supermarket or a chi-chi farm shop and whilst we want to rejuvenate the dying village store with some gusto, we are also frighteningly realistic. So whilst you’ll find us championing plenty of local products, we only do so when they cannot be bettered elsewhere. We’ll have all your seasonal favourites on the shelves when you expect them too – but we’ll also have all the products that don’t grow well in our dreary climate. We would love to tell you our lemons are British, but Mother Nature simply doesn’t extend this far with her large-orb-in-the-sky offering!
As much as our locally grown staff love seeing you all we don’t expect you to always have to come into the shop, so grab your mouse and give our online team a whirl.

Please don’t be fooled into thinking that just because we’re small we’re not powerful...the flu virus, the Mini Cooper and Kylie Minogue all do well on that front too. But Roots won’t leave you short (every pun intended) – we offer the whole shebang. The butchery (including ready prepared, fresh meals) - from M.Newitts & Son of Thame together with local farmers and suppliers - is a large part of our offering, together with a broad range of fruit, vegetables and salads which you’ll find significantly undercut the local supermarkets. Our deli counter spoils you with a choice of hams, cheeses, pies, quiches and anti pasti and (take a breath) we also have a full range of dairy items, frozen fish, dried goods, groceries and everyday essentials, together with breads and pastries, alcohol and a team that know what they’re talking about! Phew! You’re guaranteed to pick up everything from a pair of marigolds and a jar of marmite, to purple sprouting broccoli and Oxfordshire’s finest honey!
