I wonder how many people out there can remember the days when every town and village had a wide variety of specialist shops, each manned by staff who were fully conversant with the products they were offering. Some may recall the times when shopping was a social event, and enjoyed being recognized by the patrons of the milliner, the butcher, the dressmaker, the fruiterer, the fishmonger and the hardware store. Then in the 1960s a new phenomenon began to enter our lives, offering apparently unbelievable bargains and all the convenience of the one-stop shop - the supermarket. As we charged like lemmings towards these new monsters, they sucked the heart out of our town centres leaving behind a couple of pubs and a kebab shop.
       
Imagine if it were possible to turn back the clock, and re-create the enjoyable shopping experience once so intrinsic to British life, but at the same time match or even undercut supermarket prices. Well, the good news is that this vision has been brought to life by ‘Roots’ which promises low prices that could not be matched by small independents, and a combination of quality and service that the supermarkets cannot offer.
